Today's Obsession

No, it's not Keira Knightley.. although she looks particularly healthy in this picture. I absolutely love Coco Mademoiselle by Chanel. I'm a picky perfume person, if the scent is too overwhelming I will literally start gagging. Thank goodness for the deliciousness known as Chanel. This perfume has a gorgeous softness about it, the kind of softness you only find when you cuddle with a puppy or eat cotton.

With Valentine's Day fast approaching, I'm tempted to go out and buy a bottle. Too bad it's absolutely outrageously expensive. A bottle will last you a while, but the upfront costs are enough to make you think twice about forking over $90.00.

A Side of Dressing

Just got off the phone with a good friend of mine. His latest joke is that I dress like a hooker. I must admit, I do enjoy tall heels and fitted clothing, but to say that I should charge per hour for my services is a bit much......

You know those uncomfortable jokes that people tend to use because they don't have the guts to say something to your face? That's what it feels like each time he mentions my daring approach to everyday dressing. I'm not on a diet, don't put my dressing on the side. Keep it right there, on top of the salad.  I can handle a full serving of whatever you've got to dish out.  In translation: I can handle the criticism, don't feel the need to baby me by giving it out in hardy har har increments.

In retrospect, I should have responded with my explanation as to why I don't steer away from 3 inch heels. I embrace who I am as a woman wholeheartedly. I won't hide it with wearing tennis shoes, jeans, and sweatpants. I know so many feminist who believe that heels, makeup and skirts are all forms of patriarchy labeled with a size to add insult to injury. I reject their beliefs and supplant them with my own.

I am of the essentialist difference feminist thought. I embrace feminity and don't mind to show it off in all of its glory.  God made me who I am and I refuse to give into the conventions of what a man thinks is appropriate for the sake of their comfort. I refuse to feel insecure like so many women surrounding me. It's a damn shame when I hear girls talk about how 'fat they are' or how 'old they look.' Everytime I get around a group of my girlfriends its a race to the bottom to see who's got it worse.  Self-debasment should be a national women's sport- many of the girls I cross daily would win Gold.

So no, I'm not covering up any time soon. I'll continue to wear whatever fits my fancy in Vogue. If I have a low cut shirt I will balance it out a conservative skirt, pants, or maybe a fabulous pair of shorts (that threw my babe for a loop one day- shorts in winter!). I can't help what other people think of me, whether  I wear flats or a pair of Manolos. What I can control, is how I feel about myself, and damnit I feel great.

Thought of the Day

When was the last time I saw a treadmill?

My treadmill, age 30, finally died on me two weeks ago. Unfortunately, I haven't worked out since then either. I really need to get back into the swing of things, especially considering the fact that I have a gorgeous dress picked out for law school prom and it just won't work out if I'm carrying and extra five pounds. Yes, its the one I've been slobbering over for the past year and a half. I've finally got the courage to buy the damn thing. Let's just hope when it gets here it's perfect.

Thanks to the recession, Herve Leger Dresses are at an absolute bargain. I can't wait to get a hold of one of these! Around this time last year, you couldn't find one under $800.00. I love Herve Leger because his dresses celebrate the curves of a woman's body and any woman any size can look great in one of them. Just be sure to keep the rest of the ensemble (jewelry, hair, make-up) simple and sleek. This dress doesn't need a supporting cast.

Red lipstick. Does anyone ever remember how red lipstick was such an evil thing for a woman to wear? Red lipstick was for harlots! Women of ill-repute! Terrible! Horrible! Red lipstick promotes promiscuity, public indecency and the general downfall of all mankind.

You do, however, know you are an expert at makeup if you can go to CVS/Walgreens and buy a tube of red lipstick without trying it on and pick the perfect shade. I passed that test two weeks ago and I'm still enjoying the fruits of my labor.

Before you shake your head and think I'm crazy, let me explain to you why red lipstick is a necessary part of your daily cosmetic diet. Red lipstick instantly dresses you up for any occasion. If you don't have time to apply layers of make-up, blush, and eyeliner can rest easy with a tube of rich red lipstick.

So, are you intrigued? Well let me give you a few tips on how to wear this classic trend:

  1. If you have never purchased a tube of red lipstick, please be sure to stop by a cosmetics counter in a department store and have an attendant help you. Red lipstick is a difficult purchase because how intricate underlying skin tones can change the way the lipstick looks on you. I choose red lipstick with a cooler base tone to compliment my skin color. A cool base also adds the perception of white teeth.
  2. Lip liner is crucial- It will help your lipstick color last longer and provides a good foundation.
  3. Minimal make-up. You don't want to look like a whore.
  4. Just have fun!
I've got to get back to my real life, also known as law school.

Diane Von Furstenberg

... Invented the classic wrap dress.

On a side note, if you have been on Ebay.com, Herve Leger dresses have gone down in price in a big way from a year ago. I'm pretty excited, I'm hoping to purchase one in the near future. Who needs food when you can wear couture?

Trivia Question of the Day

In 1976, which iconic designer invented the wrap dress?

Stay tuned to find out who. If you know who, please leave a comment. No cheating (i.e. google!)

Quote of the Day

"Can't you see I'm sick, I've been wearing flats all week"

A surefire way of telling whether I'm feeling well or not is a quick look at my feet. If I'm wearing flats, chances are I'm probably feeling ill. My throat is still bothering me and I've had the toughest time getting my work done for class. Oh well, that's life right? I guess the upside is I turned in a major paper today and I hit a paper topic out of the park yesterday. Good thing, I'll need my Professor's recommendation if I want a clerkship. Looks like all the firm jobs are gone.

I got this in the mail today. It's gorgeous! I am trying to keep myself from buying this in every color.

NO. no. NO. NO.

I feel sorry for the poor girl who thought this would be a good investment piece for the fall season. Ladies, just stay away from anything that makes you look like you killed a small, furry animal.

Dolce & Gabanna Leopard Print Platform pumps. Half the price of a pair of New Christian Louboutin platform heels. Only difference? The label. Only problem? I still want the Christian Louboutin platforms. I'm on a quest to find a pair priced around $400.00.

Today's Obsession

Let's be frank here. When it comes to finances, I believe in spending more on less. We're all going to die and our savings accounts can't come with us so why not live life to the fullest? I'd rather eat spaghetti for a week than wear knock offs, therefore the must have Chanel sunglasses with rows of pearl agate on the side is my must have of the season. I plan to purchase a pair as soon as my last firm check comes in this week.  I dare not say how much it costs.

Ten Things

Why I Love My Job

  1. I get my own office with a name plate
  2. I have a secretary who is probably smarter than me
  3. Free expensive lunches ever week
  4. Interesting assignments
  5. I no longer have to do the dishes or answer the phone
  6. People care about my opinion... scary but true
  7. I get to wear a suit when I want and something business casual when I don't want to
  8. I get paid hella money
  9. I have a chance to move up on the corporate ladder
  10. It's my dream come true
I'm sorry I haven't stopped by in a while. Work is pretty taxing, I work around 50 to 60 hours a week. I wouldn't change it for the world but I know it has changed my life. I spend more time working and sleeping than going out with my friends. I guess the only thing I really miss right now is having someone to share the success with.

Working Hard for Da Money,

Did I mention I bought six pairs of shoes for work?

Moment of the Day

I opened up my Lucky Magazine and was greatly disappointed. Nothing. Nothing as in nothing new, sexy, hot, fashionable or remotely eyebrow raising. Sigh, is it September yet?

Thoughts on a Warm Sunday Afternoon

Part II I suppose...

I got an email from Nordstrom about a sneak preview of fall's latest fashions. It was a total yawn fest. I don't have much time to talk about it now, I've only got 48 hours until my Constitutional law exam, so I'm trying to put my nose to the grind. For all of you who overdosed on this fall's trendy fashions and didn't stick to buying conservatively, take a deep breath. It looks like many of the looks we saw this fall will continue to be the rage next fall. I think the main reason why designers haven't come up with anything amazing this season is because of the economic downturn. Even the fashion world has taken a moment of silence for the millions of Americans who are feeling less than stylish due to their lighter pocketbooks. Well, I better get back to work on suspect classes. Suspect classes as in race, religion, and national origin.... not whether anyone looks good in paisley...

Is it Fall yet?

OMG... Shoes!

I'm still up. I drank one too many iced caramel macciatos today.

I had a busy day today. I spent six hours studying for my Property law final and a half hour on the phone with my mom.

I'm getting used to the single life. I have my routine, I get up early, grab breakfast, and if I'm lucky enough to get up on time, I'll go for a run. For the first time in almost five years, I'm completely alone. Well, not completely I still have my friends and family, but no other half to worry about. I love the fact that I can watch a chic flick without begging Mr. Safety for permission. I can wear outrageously scandalous clothes and have a drink without someone shaking their finger in my face.

I realize that in the five years I spent with Mr. Safety, I never once thought about us not being together. I never thought that I may need to work on my friendships because if he's not around, I'll need someone's shoulder to cry on. He was my best friend, boyfriend, counselor, and emergency contact all rolled into one. I never reached out because I didn't need to when I had my all-purpose Mr. Safety doll. Just pull him out and at the press of the button he's whatever I needed at the time. It's every girl's dream, right? To find a guy who can be everything she needs in one neat little package. That's what fashion is all about, finding the  perfect skirt to go with everything.  Minimalism is the new black.

Minimalism doesn't work that well when it comes to relationships. I have learned the hard lesson that relationships should be treated just like a good shoe collection. Diversify, diversify, diversify. You can never have too many shoes. High heeled conservative black leather pumps for work, red suede wedges for play, and leopard print d'orsays for late nights out on the town. Wearing one pair of shoes for everything will wear them down and cause a ton of discomfort.

Kenneth Cole pleather pointed toe ballet flats, size 8.5. I bought them over a year ago because I needed shoes for work. I bought them right before the season started, so you know I paid way too much. Needless to say, I wore these shoes everywhere. Work, after work, date nights, and even church on Sundays. When I wasn't quite sure about which shoes to wear, I always new my strappy Kenneth Cole shoes would be a perfect fit.

Almost a year and a half later, my shoes are worn down to the heel. You can even see the bottom of the metal supports used to keep the shoe's frame a perfect 0.5 inches from the ground.

I wore Mr. Safety to the ground. I wore him to the ground and woke up to a world where I didn't have any other pair of black ballet flats to turn to. I relied on him so much for all of my needs that I ended up alone and without a clue in the end.

I'm getting used to changing shoes. I have so many new friends to spend time with and to call when shit hits the fan. I'm stepping out into a new world where I spend more time with the girl with the size 8.5 feet. (Which I might add, is quite a big size for someone 5' 2")

If the Shoe fits, wear it judiciously,

P. Manolos
BTW- You know that feverish obsession I've had about the black suede pointy toed ankle boats with dress that hit just above the knee? Well,  I guess I'm psychic because the latest Vogue had pictures of nothing but celebs wearing... wait for it... ANKLE boots with sweet dresses that hit just below the knee. To top it off, they also stated the trend was perfect because it balances out the sweetness of spring with a bit of rock-n-roll edge. Gasp, I don't think I even need to subscribe anymore... :)

Today's Obsession

I have a pair in pink. It's raining today and I love seeing all of the different rain boots. I'm feeling pretty exhausted, I've had a sore throat for the past couple days so that's a surefire sign that I am coming down with something. Ah well, such is life.
